About Community School

Founded in 2018, Build UP Community School ("BHM") is the flagship campus of Build UP—America’s first early-college, career-connected high school model that integrates education, workforce development, and homeownership to break intergenerational cycles of poverty. Located in Birmingham, Alabama, BHM currently serves students in grades 9 through early postsecondary, supporting them on a six-year pathway that leads to a high school diploma, college credit and/or industry-recognized credential, and eventual ownership of a renovated home. Our mascot, the Timberwolf, reflects the CORE values that drive our mission. Like the Timberwolf, BHM students thrive in community, take ownership of their futures, show resilience in adversity, and pursue excellence in academics and service. The Timberwolf symbolizes the strength and unity it takes to rebuild neighborhoods—starting with your own.

BHM is located in the heart of the Titusville neighborhood of Birmingham and is deeply committed to serving youth from this historic community and across Jefferson County. Through a unique blend of academic rigor, paid internships, and real estate training, we empower students to become skilled professionals, civic leaders, and wealth-builders—equipped to revitalize their communities from within. As we continue to grow, our school remains grounded in the belief that equity equals ownership—and that the most effective way to transform a city is by investing in the talent and potential of its youth.
